Deep Dive: Sunlight as Medicine

In the early 1900s, doctors understood a truth we've largely forgotten: the sun is medicine. Sanatoriums built "sun decks," and Heliotherapy was used to treat tuberculosis, rickets, and wounds. "Open-Air Schools" found that children who learned outside were less sickly, stronger, and more focused.
Beyond Vitamin D:
- Serotonin & melatonin: sunlight on the retina triggers serotonin production, which later converts to melatonin for sleep.
- Blood pressure: UV rays trigger nitric oxide release, relaxing blood vessels.
- Mitochondrial health: red and near-infrared light helps mitochondria produce ATP more efficiently.
- Immune activation: sunlight stimulates white blood cell production.
Why D3 + K2 together: D3 is the "gatekeeper" that opens the door for calcium to enter the bloodstream; K2 is the "traffic director," making sure calcium goes to bones and teeth, not arteries.
Getting light nutrition:
- The Morning Gaze: within 30 minutes of waking, get outside for 5–10 minutes without sunglasses.
- Eat your Vitamin D: fatty fish, pasture-raised egg yolks, sun-exposed mushrooms.
- The "Smart Sun" Practice: 10–20 minutes of midday sun on bare skin before sunscreen.
- Open the windows: full-spectrum light still lifts mood even through glass.
