Deep Dive: Interoception — The Sixth Sense
No video added to this lesson yet.
Interoception is your ability to feel what's happening inside your body: your heart beating, your stomach churning, tightness in your chest. In a culture obsessed with "the hustle," we're conditioned to sever this connection — treating the body as a machine to be driven rather than a vessel to be listened to.
The cost of ignoring it:
- Chronic inflammation & burnout — ignoring hunger, suppressed rest, and stress lets the nervous system get "fried," often resulting in inflammation and fatigue we didn't see coming.
- Emotional dysregulation — emotions are physiological before they're mental. Anxiety starts as a racing heart, anger as heat. Missing these cues means missing the chance to regulate them.
- Loss of joy — you cannot selectively numb feelings. Numbing exhaustion also numbs joy.
Rebuilding interoception:
- The Body Compass: Scan your past week somatically. Find one moment your body felt heavy, tight, or constricted (a "no"), and one moment it felt light, expansive, or "fizzy" (a "yes").
- The Envy Audit: Jealousy is a map, not a flaw. If you're jealous of a friend's travel, your body is signaling a craving for freedom.
- Recognize Flow State: Reconnect with activities where you lose track of time — this is where the nervous system regulates and healing happens.
